So You've Won the Lottery! But you have never bought a ticket?

Communication via email has become a staple in today’s fast paced world. This tool is an effective and convenient way of communicating, but it has brought with it a whole new way for opportunists to perpetrate scams!

Typical lottery scams are emails which say that you have won a great prize in a lottery, and then provide some instructions as to how to claim the prize. Claiming the prize usually involves your providing confidential information and/or instructions to contact a lottery agent to secure your prize.

After contacting the agent, the target of the scam will be asked to pay “processing fees” or “transfer charges” so that the winnings can be distributed, but will never receive any lottery payment. Many email lottery scams use the names of legitimate lottery organizations, but this does not mean the actual organizations are in any way involved with the scams.

There are several ways to recognize a fake lottery email:

Have you gotten an email or phone call telling you won a lottery or sweepstakes that you don’t remember entering?

Try Googling the number to see what comes up. Chances are, it’s a scam and others may have posted information that will list the many ways it’s been used. Even if you can’t come up with anything when you check, you should never give out personal information over the phone or internet unless you have initiated the contact with a known person or company.

Ten tips to help strech your budget

  1. Try bringing your lunch to work every day instead of purchasing it.

  2. Separate wants from needs. When money is tight it should not be spent unless absolutely necessary.

  3. If you need to buy a car, buy one with a higher MPG (miles per gallon). And save on gas each month!

  4. Keep track of your spending. If you know where you money is going it will be easier to make changes if you need to.

  5. Avoid using credit to pay your bills.

  6. Have some of your paycheck directly deposited into your savings account.

  7. Avoid spending a significant amount of money on periodic purchases, like gifts and vacation.

  8. Cut or downgrade your services - like cable or cell phone.

  9. Instead of purchasing a book or magazine or renting a video, go the library. It’s free!

  10. Try lowering your energy bill. Turn off appliances and lights when they are not needed. Use a fan instead of air-conditioning and a sweater instead of turning on the heat.

CEO’s corner

It’s hard to believe that in June of this year, I celebrated 25 years with United Health Credit Union. The credit union has come a long way since I first started back in June 1985. It was just after the merge of Mills and Peninsula Credit Unions and we had assets of $3.3M.

These are just a few of the many milestones we’ve reached over the years and it’s been both fun and challenging. I’ve enjoyed it all and while compliance and regulations may turn my hair gray and keep me locked up in my office, it’s the members that drive me to keep going. That’s what the credit union is all about, helping its members!!! Thank you all for your continued support!

How To Save For Something BIG!

  1. Decide on what you want to get. Find out the pricing. The best idea is to do a little research and compare prices online so that you get the best deal possible.

  2. Set aside half of all funds received. Deposit the money to your UHCU savings account.

  3. Get a job if you’re old enough. Depending on location, most teens can start working If they are 14 (16 in some places) or older. Not only will this help you save up for the big purchase but the job will help you gain references for your resume.

  4. Budget wisely. Don’t make a purchase because it was on sale. Stay true to the dream of buying what you said you really wanted. Envision the desired object, and don’t spend any of your savings on some other purchase. Keep the dream.

  5. Sell handmade or craft items at school, if this is allowed. Check with the school’s administrators to see if selling at school is allowed. Research prices and shop around. Once 95 percent of the money is tucked away, try to purchase the item on sale.

  6. Get a big jar or tin can and put every coin and whatever cash you find laying in your wallet, your table, etc. into the container. Don’t open it for 30 days or until it’s full. Then deposit the contents to your UHCU Account.
